SWE internship roles with F500, Mid Sized Companies, etc

Bonus tip when applying these roles:

After a whole year round of recruitment, many interviews, and internship offers later… I’ve developed a 5-step system for internship applications.

🔷 Polish your Linkedin profile
🔷 Have a well-written and formatted resume
🔷 Build a cover letter template to use
🔷 Block out times in your week to work on applications
🔷 Use Simplify to apply to internships

Recently, I’ve been seeing more and more students getting burned out from applications, especially in this increasingly competitive job market.

Whether it’s because of the constant split screen copy paste for job descriptions OR facing the overwhelming amount of internships on the web OR losing track of your applications, it’s almost a full time job to BE working on job applications.

Intern Spotlight: Isabella Kalinowski

Can you give us a brief introduction of yourself and a look into your role at Caterpillar Inc as a Corporate Engineer intern?

I’m Isabella Kalinowski, I go by Bella! I’m a junior in mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. This past summer I was a corporate engineering intern, working for Caterpillar in their Industrial Power Systems Division. My team was focused on bringing the C13D Industrial Diesel Engine to the production phase, creating customer-specific builds.

What were your main tasks and responsbilities during your internship?

My role was a mix of technical engineering and engineering project management. I analyzed fittings and interfering components using CREO (CAD software) and component print examination. I engaged in engine build-ups and tear-downs, exploring parts in the lab. My biggest project involved leading a program in management of hundreds of engine model issues across numerous pilot builds to ensure closure.

What is one advice you’d give to students who want to pursue corporate engineering?

My biggest advice is to not be afraid to talk and ask questions a lot. As an intern or new engineer, no one expects you to know what to do. Showing interest and excitement to your team’s or a recruiter’s products is a fantastic way to learn and demonstrate interest.

A lot of engineering companies, like Caterpillar, are not looking for you to already have every skill needed to be proficient in the role. They want someone who will fit well with the community, and they know that they can teach you the specific abilities once you are in.
