Intern Spotlight: Marina Lee

Can you give us an introduction of yourself and a look into your role at Chevron as a SWE intern?
Hi everyone! My name is Marina and I’m a junior at University of Southern California studying computer science. This past summer, I was a software engineer intern at Chevron where I developed a full-stack web app to replace their enterprise subscription of an existing platform they were using. Overall, it was a really exciting and fulfilling experience as a I learned lots of new technologies and got to meet fellow interns from a wide array of disciplines!

You are one of the top 50 hackers in the Major League Hacking list in 2023, how has your involvement in extracurricular activities like clubs, programs, and your own organization Citro Tech play a role in your early career journey?
Ever since high school, I’ve been really involved in the hackathon space. After noticing a lack of computer science education throughout the U.S., I became inspired to found Citro Tech, an organization dedicated to increase diversity in the tech field.
My team and I have led two iterations of our hackathon, Citro Hacks, for a total of 1300+ students from over 50 countries. It was really rewarding seeing the worldwide developer community come together! This experience has definitely played a huge role in my early career journey because it helped me hone my leadership skills and make a real impact for a cause I care about.
What is one advice you’d give to students who want to pursue a SWE internship in the future and in general - those who want to further their passion in CS?
If you’re pursuing a SWE internship, I’d definitely recommend you to start studying for technical interviews early and make sure to highlight past experiences and personal projects on your resume. Also, imposter syndrome is very much a real thing in this very competitive field, but joining supporting communities like MLH, Rewriting the Code, NCWIT, and Girls Who Code helps a lot in finding opportunities and making genuine connections!

A look into Google’s 7-year mission to give AI a robot body
Google’s robotics initiative, Everyday Robots, was launched in 2016 as part of its innovation lab, Google X, to give AI a physical presence through autonomous robots. The project aimed to address global issues like aging populations and labor shortages using AI-powered robots to perform everyday tasks.
Despite some success, including creating robots that could clean, sort trash, and dance, the high costs and long timelines led Google to shut down the process in January 2023. Concerns remain about the U.S.’s ability to compete globally in robots as other nations, like China, invest heavily in this technology. Read more HERE from WIRED.
