Intern Spotlight: Andrea Yang

Can you give us an introduction of yourself and a brief look into your role at Chegg as a content marketing intern?

Hello everyone! My name is Andrea, I’m a sophomore studying Economics and Media Studies at UC Berkeley. I was a content marketing intern at Chegg for summer 2024 and I worked across multiple teams like UX, Communications, and Legal as a marketing intern.

Aside from my main focus on creating TikTok content for the Chegg TikTok account, I had the opportunity to spearhead the start of the Chegg Ambassador creator program with now hundreds of creators. I was in charge of sourcing ambassadors, vetting applications, and content reviewing.

What skills would you highlight that helped you the most in the marketing projects you spearheaded at Chegg?

I’d say that my passion for video editing and content creation really allowed me to maximize my success at Chegg this summer. Going into this internship, I had a clear vision for the content that I want to create for Chegg with a focus on GenZ audience and ongoing trends.

As the youngest intern, I would also highlight public speaking as an extremely helpful skill in any internship or project. Being unafraid to stand up for my own opinions and speaking with compassion helped me a lot while I was working in teams with more senior members.

Do you have any advice for students who are pursuing marketing internships in the future?

Spend time creating a good portfolio to showcase your work and creativity, because it’s important to not only show but also quantify the level of your success in your past experiences. Numbers AND visuals matter in marketing, so having a nice portfolio is a plus when applying to marketing, sales, or even design internships.

Another advice would be to build close interpersonal relationships by being genuine. Not every moment of your internship has to be professional, it’s also a summer for you to have fun, learn, and make new friends.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes at the Brazilian Supreme Court after issuing an order to block social media platform X. Credit: Ueslei Marcelino/Reuters

After a Brazilian Supreme Court Justice instilled a nation-wide block on X last week, the order remains upheld.

A Brazilian Supreme Court panel unanimously upheld a decision to block social network X, owned by Elon Musk, for refusing to suspend certain accounts as ordered by the court. The justices emphasized that the ban complies with Brazilian law, asserting that foreign companies must follow national rules.

The decision stems from a conflict between Musk and Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is working to remove hate speech online, while Musk argues it infringes on free speech. The ruling strengthens the legal standing of the ban, though a full court review by all 11 justices is expected. Read more here from New York Times.

Instagram Launches Live Test of Friend Map Location Sharing to Users

Instagram has launched a live test of its new “Friend Map” feature, allowing users to view the locations of their friends and where they’ve been, based on tagged posts and stories.

Users can also add notes to locations, offering feedback and insights to friends. The feature, similar to Snapchat's Snap Map, is designed to be shared only with "Close Friends" or mutual follows, aiming to enhance real-life meet-ups and social interaction.

However, privacy concerns remain, as location sharing could pose risks if misused. Instagram is testing the feature cautiously, targeting younger users who favor more intimate interactions via DMs, as competition with TikTok and Snapchat intensifies. Read more here.

Resource of the Day: Cold DMs

Cold DMs intimidated me.

After I began to LinkedIn cold DM professionals in my field, company recruiters, and students with similar passion projects, I was able to not only build a strong network but also find amazing opportunities for the future.

That’s why I created 40 customizable cold DM templates for students and all job seekers for these instances:

➤ Reaching out to an alumni
➤ Introducing yourself as a candidate to recruiters
➤ Connecting with professionals in your aspiring profession
➤ Asking for a coffee chat
➤ Brief introductions (send a note with your invite)

Stop sending cold DMs of “I’d love to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn”, and start sending these cold DMs to actually get responses back.

Even if you don’t get a response back, at least you didn’t throw away your shot by only giving a one sentence message.
