Business Operations internship roles with F500, Mid Sized Companies, etc
⭐ Bonus tip when applying these roles:
Cover letters. To include or not to include.
I’ve heard from recruiters to not include a cover letter because “they don’t read it” - but I’ve also heard from recruiters that my cover letter really stood out to them when filtering applications.
Here is what I think about cover letters:
Write your own template. Have keywords relevant to your job niche in your cover letter, then when applying to different internships - switch out the company name AND relevant job description keywords/tasks.
This process takes me around 5-8 minutes to switch out the text and download it as a pdf to attach to my application.
If the applicant pool is anything from 500-1000 for massive companies, I generally doubt they’d have the time to read through a cover letter so if you really don’t want to even attach a cover letter - do it for the internships with too big of an applicant pool.
But I’d highly recommend you to at least do it for the ones with a smaller applicant pool for roles that you especially see yourself working in.

Intern Spotlight: Shreya Nimbali

Can you give us a brief introduction of yourself and a look into your role at Delta Airlines as a Data Engineering intern?
I’m Shreya Nimbali, a senior majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics at UMass Amherst. During the summer of 2023, I interned at Delta Airlines as a data engineer, which was my first introduction to the field. My role focused on enhancing data processes to improve operational efficiency.
One of my key projects involved developing a dashboard to monitor inflight medical events. This project encompassed the entire ETL process — extracting data, transforming it for analysis, and loading it into a visual dashboard — providing valuable insights for decision-making and improving in-flight medical response efficiency.

How did the projects you worked on align with your career goals?
The projects I worked on at Delta Airlines directly aligned with my career goals of leveraging the power of data for impactful decision-making. By utilizing AWS tools and data visualization techniques, I was able to enhance my skills in data manipulation and analysis, reinforcing my passion for using data to drive business improvements and support strategic initiatives.
What is one advice you’d give to students who want to pursue data engineering compared to other kinds of engineering roles?
My advice for students pursuing data engineering is to recognize that it is a niche role requiring a specific skill set. Beyond Python programming, mastering SQL for data manipulation is essential, along with familiarity with cloud services like AWS.
Proficiency in visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI can also enhance your ability to present insights. Focus on hands-on projects that cover the entire data pipeline, and seek opportunities that provide practical experience in these areas.
