Intern Spotlight: Tony Wang

Can you give us an introduction of yourself and a brief look into your role at Amazon as a SWE intern?

Hey! I’m Tony, an incoming sophomore at Stanford studying CS, and I’m currently a Software Engineer Intern at Amazon! I mainly work with the devices teams (think Alexa, Fire TV, Kindle, etc.) focusing on applying Machine Learning and Large Language Models (LLMs) to build predictive models that assist various Amazon teams. I love how interdisciplinary my work is and how I get to collaborate with incredible engineers across all different types of backgrounds and experiences.

What is your favorite memory/experience at Amazon?

My experience has been super fun; Amazon does a great job of organizing events for interns, so I’ve had a blast doing everything from team archery to intern picnics to beachside spikeball to lab experiments to even tours of other Bay Area tech offices. My favorite memory so far has been an intern bowling event where we let loose with free food and arcade games— it was amazing energy all around.

What is one advice you’d give to students who are looking to pursue SWE roles in the tech industry?

One piece of advice for those looking to pursue SWE roles is not to be afraid to cold reach out to recruiters. Building these connections is super valuable, and even if it doesn’t lead to immediate opportunities, it’s great to have built that network and created that conversation. Another piece of advice is to try to build lots of projects, as these are not only great for the resume but also great for building technical skills. It can also feel super rewarding!
